چکیده

[1] Observations and model experiments are used to investigate the influence of El Niño/the Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on air-sea interaction in the north Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. In one experiment, observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the tropical Pacific are specified as boundary conditions in an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), while SSTs over the remainder of the global oceans are simulated by a mixed layer model. The observed warming in the tropical North Atlantic and cooling in the Gulf of Mexico in the winter/spring after ENSO peaks is well simulated by the model. Prior to the basin wide warming, latent heat fluxes generate negative SST anomalies in the Caribbean during August –October. Ocean-atmosphere coupling outside of the tropical Pacific significantly enhances the warm season atmospheric response to ENSO in the Caribbean region.

The ENSO effect on the tropical Atlantic variability: A regionally coupled model study

[1] A CGCM is used to study the relative roles played by local air-sea interaction and remote ENSO effects on the tropical Atlantic interannual variability. A regional coupling strategy allows full air-sea coupling only over the Atlantic Ocean north of 30!S. Two experiments were conducted, respectively with either climatological or real time boundary conditions prescribed over the uncoupled por...

The influence of Atlantic-Eurasian teleconnection patterns on temperature regimes in South Caspian Sea coastal areas: a study of Golestan Province, North Iran

The main objective of this study was to reveal the impact of nine climate indices on temperature changes and climate oscillations in Golestan Province along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Climate indices data from across the Atlantic-Eurasian sector were collected from the NCEP/NCAR, the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) and the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) over a period of 40 years (1971...

Tropical Atlantic Variability: Patterns, Mechanisms, and Impacts

This chapter reviews the progress made in the past decade in understanding tropical Atlantic climate variability. In addition to an equatorially anti-symmetric seasonal cycle forced directly by the seasonal march of the sun, Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) displays a pronounced annual cycle on the equator that results from continental monsoon forcing and air-sea interaction. This cycle i...

Tropical climate variability: interactions across the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans

Modes of tropical climate variability, such as the El Niño– Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Basinwide Mode (IOBM), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the Atlantic Equatorial Mode (AEM) (sometimes referred to as the Atlantic Zonal Mode, or Atlantic Niño) interact most readily via the atmosphere. Sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropics drive changes in the Walker Ci...
